7 Things to Check Before Renting a Restroom Trailer in Colorado

Recently, I came across an online discussion where someone was considering purchasing and renovating an older restroom trailer.

The photos sparked quite a conversation. People pointed out everything from the trailer's age and exterior condition to the potential cost of updating plumbing, electrical systems, HVAC, fixtures, and other components.

It immediately caught my attention because restroom trailers are my business.

Out of respect for the owner and the person who originally shared the photos, I'm not reposting their actual images here. Instead, I've used an AI-created illustration to represent the general type and condition of older restroom trailer that sparked this article.

And to be clear, you can't determine whether a restroom trailer is safe, mechanically sound, or worth renovating simply by looking at a photograph. A proper inspection would be needed to make those determinations.

But the discussion raised a completely different question that I think every person renting a restroom trailer should consider:

Do you actually know what restroom trailer is going to show up at your event?

When you're comparing restroom trailer rentals for a wedding, corporate event, festival, construction project, renovation, or private gathering in Colorado, it's easy to start with one question:

How much does it cost?

Price absolutely matters.

But two companies can both advertise a "luxury restroom trailer" while offering equipment that is dramatically different in age, condition, appearance, amenities, maintenance, and overall guest experience.

That's why I think there's an even more important question to ask:

What am I actually getting for that price?

Here are seven things I recommend checking before you book.

1. Ask to See Current Photos of the Actual Restroom Trailer

This may be the most important—and most overlooked—question in the rental process.

Ask for recent photos of the actual trailer, or the same model and condition of trailer, that will be delivered to your event.

Don't rely solely on a beautiful stock photo or manufacturer image.

Look at the exterior.

Look at the restroom suites.

Look at the stairs and handrails.

Look at the sinks, toilets, flooring, countertops, fixtures, lighting, and overall condition.

If you're planning a wedding or upscale event, remember that this trailer may sit just outside your venue and be used by virtually every guest.

You should know what is coming.

2. Look Beyond the Word "Luxury"

The word "luxury" gets used a lot in the restroom trailer industry.

But not every trailer described as luxury provides the same experience.

When comparing options, look at the actual amenities.

Does it have flushing toilets?

Running water?

Private restroom suites?

Climate control?

Interior lighting?

Mirrors?

Vanities and sinks?

Quality flooring and finishes?

A restroom trailer can be perfectly functional without necessarily providing the environment you want at a wedding, corporate gathering, or upscale event.

Compare the actual equipment and amenities, not simply the terminology used to advertise it.

3. Pay Attention to the Exterior, Too

Most people understandably focus on what's inside the restroom.

But don't forget where the trailer will be sitting.

At a Colorado wedding, it may be parked near the reception area and could even appear in the background of photographs.

At a corporate event, it becomes part of the experience you're providing employees, customers, and guests.

Look at the condition and cleanliness of the exterior, stairs, handrails, doors, wheels, and other visible components.

For me, the outside matters almost as much as the inside.

4. Ask How the Trailer Is Cleaned and Inspected

A restroom trailer shouldn't simply be emptied and sent to the next event.

Ask the rental company:

How is the trailer cleaned between rentals?

Is it inspected before delivery?

Who performs that inspection?

Are the toilets, sinks, plumbing, HVAC, lighting, and other systems checked before it leaves?

I personally inspect our trailers before delivery because I'd much rather discover an issue while preparing the trailer than while setting up at someone's wedding or event.

It's not the glamorous part of this business.

But it's one of the most important.

5. Understand the Water, Power & Climate-Control Requirements

A beautiful restroom trailer isn't very useful if the site isn't properly prepared for it.

Before booking, make sure you understand exactly what the trailer requires.

Our 2-station luxury restroom trailers typically require access to a dedicated 120V/20A electrical outlet within approximately 100 feet for standard operation.

For water, access to a standard ¾-inch spigot within approximately 100 feet is ideal. We can fill the onboard fresh-water tank before the event and then disconnect the hose.

No water available?

Altitude can provide fresh-water service.

No appropriate power source?

We can provide a generator.

Remote properties and mountain venues are common in Colorado. Lack of utilities isn't necessarily a problem.

The important thing is identifying those requirements before delivery day.

6. Ask What Happens if Something Goes Wrong

Nobody wants to think about equipment problems while planning a wedding or event.

But this is still equipment.

Restroom trailers contain plumbing, electrical systems, pumps, HVAC equipment, water tanks, waste tanks, fixtures, and other components.

Ask your rental company:

Who do I call if there's a problem?

Will someone actually answer?

Who maintains the equipment?

What is checked before delivery to reduce the chance of a problem?

Reliability isn't simply about buying good equipment.

It's also about maintenance, preparation, communication, and having someone take responsibility for the rental from delivery through pickup.

7. Compare Value—Not Just the Lowest Quote

This brings us back to price.

If one restroom trailer company quotes $1,200 and another quotes $2,000, it's completely reasonable to ask:

Why?

But make sure you're comparing the same things.

Differences in price can reflect equipment age and condition, amenities, cleaning standards, maintenance, delivery distance, setup, pickup, fresh-water service, generator requirements, and the level of support included with the rental.

That doesn't mean the most expensive restroom trailer is automatically the best.

And it certainly doesn't mean every inexpensive restroom trailer is bad.

It simply means the lowest number on a quote doesn't tell you everything you need to know.

Understand what you're actually getting.

Your Restroom Trailer Rental Checklist

Before signing a contract or paying a deposit, ask:

• Can I see recent photos of the actual restroom trailer?

• How old is the equipment and what condition is it in?

• What amenities are included?

• Is the trailer climate-controlled?

• How is it cleaned and inspected between rentals?

• What power does it require?

• What water access does it require?

• Can you provide water or a generator if the venue doesn't have them?

• What happens if there is an equipment issue?

• Are delivery, setup, and pickup included?

• Are there additional travel or service charges?

A professional restroom trailer company should be comfortable answering those questions.
